The Jacquie Hirsch for A.L.L. Foundation

This is the first triathlon that the Western NY Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society has entered and trained participants for.  This is also the 20 year anniversary for Team In Training. This event will be my third event (2 prior marathon’s 2005 in San Diego and 2006 in Disney World) but will mean the most to me since I am doing this one for Jacquie. I couldn’t believe my ears the day Nichole called me to tell me Jacquie was diagnosed with Leukemia and it was that day I decided I was going to do another Team In Training Event as soon as I could. I was going to do another marathon in Arizona in January 2009, but when I heard they were entering a team in their first ever triathlon it took me about 10 seconds to make up my mind, plus with Pat LaDuca training the team, it was a winning combination. If Jacquie is up for the fight against cancer then I knew I could get myself ready to battle the intensity of a triathlon. Thinking of Jacquie and her fight, will get me through any of the tough training days and the event itself. She is my hero!!!

The Triathlon is on September 14 in Washington DC. It is an Olympic Level Triathlon which calls for a 1500 meter swim in the Potomac River (.93 miles), 25 mile bike ride and a 10K run (6.2 miles) through the streets and monuments of Washington DC. In addition to the training I am committed to raising a minimum of $3800 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I decided to hold a raffle ticket sale that will be based on the NYS Lottery 3 digit evening drawing everyday the month of August. I have sold almost all 1000 tickets with the help of several friends and family. Donation for each ticket is $5.00 and the winners will receive $25 on Monday’s – Saturday’s, and $50 on Sunday’s. It is like being entered to win the lottery every day in August, except the amount you can win is limited to $25 or $50. I have a few tickets left (about 40) if anyone would like one I can be reached via e-mail at RBowers11@verizon.net or via cell phone 870-3899. Of course when the tickets are gone I will still be accepting any direct donations.

The Nation's Triathlon - Competitors  will race on a wide mostly flat fast course completely closed to traffic by the officers of the DC Metropolitan Police and the United States Park Police. The course combines long stretches perfect for the aerobars with turns and twists on the Avenues and Boulevards of downtown Washington DC. On the route they race right by the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, National Mall, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Navy Memorial, Kennedy Center, Korean War Memorial, FBI Building, National Archives, National Treasury, Holocaust Memorial and more! It is a thrilling experience! Visit the link below to learn more. www.thenationstriathlon.com

Cause' when push
        comes to shove
You taste what
        you're made of.
You might bend,
        till you break
Cause its all
        you can take.
On your knees
        you look up,
Decide you've
        had enough.
You get mad,
        you get strong,
Wipe your hands
        shake it off,
THEN YOU STAND.
